How To Replace Your Vacuum Cleaner Parts

By Alan Cassidy

A vacuum cleaner is a very useful piece of appliance to have. It saves you much more time and effort to clean up the house, as compared to the traditional way of cleaning such as sweeping and dusting. Not to mention the days when you enjoy seeing all those dust and dirt magically disappear into the floor and suctioned into the deep abyss of your vacuum bag.

However, just like other appliances, no vacuum cleaner as of now has yet to be designed to last forever. Sooner or later you may have to buy another one, a more powerful and perhaps, more cost efficient one. Then again, if you have just bought your vacuum machine (or if it has been only five years since you bought it), there might be little reason why you have to shell out cash on another one.

Sure, you might notice some flaws in the performance of your vacuum machine. That should be completely normal. Most of the time, the problem originates from a specific part of the vacuum which means that not the entire machine is affected. For this reason, you need not buy a brand new machine (unless, of course, you want to). To save money, you can practice replacing some parts of the vacuum, parts which are quite prone to problems.

Vacuum cleaner bags

The bags of a vacuum appliance (which is, of course, a bagged type) must be one of the parts of the vacuum appliance which should be replaced most often. You should never wait for the disposable dirt bag to be full before you dispose of it. Most of the time, it is recommended that you replace the dirt bag once it is already half-filled or even less.

Not replacing your vacuum cleaning bags can hassle your cleaning. The suction of the vacuum cleaner does not work effectively on a full vacuum cleaner bag so very little dirt will be picked up. Aside from that, you may notice that the machine will spit out dirt, a condition that happens because it has already reached its maximum capacity.

Most importantly, if you do not change the vacuum machine bags often, the motor will be ruined. If I were you, I would not take that risk. If the motor has already been damaged, you might as well buy a new vacuum. Anyway, replacing the disposable bags is very easy and not at all time consuming. You just have to make sure your new dirt bag matches your vacuum cleaner.

Vacuum cleaner belt

This is another vacuum machine part that is prone to damages. One of the signs you should look out for to know whether your belt needs replacing is when the motor begins humming more loudly than it normally does. Some people do not pay attention to this obvious signal and continue cleaning with their vacuum appliance. This is the leading cause why carpets are ruined by vacuums.

If you notice an abnormal humming sound, turn the machine off at one. Another sign that you need to replace the belt is when you notice a black streak showing on your carpets during your cleaning session. As said before, once you see this, turn the machine off immediately.

To replace the belt, first you have to make sure the new one you have bought matches your unit. Unplug your vacuum and open the plates which are located by the beater bars. Clean the beater bars and remove any obstruction. Slip the new belt onto the beater bar and connect it with the shaft. You may have to use a screwdriver to give the belt a good stretch. Replace the plate over the beater bars.

Vacuum cleaner brushes

You can give credit to these vacuum machine parts for the clean floor you have. The brushes are the ones swept over the dirt and dust to have it suctioned into the machine. However, because of this task assigned to the vacuum cleaner brush, it is also very prone to damages such as wearing out. In order to assure effective cleaning without any hassles, you may have to replace worn vacuum cleaner brushes.

One of the measures you can do to test whether your brush needs replacement is the ruler test. Turn off and unplug the vacuum machine and turn it over to gain access to the bottom plate. Lay the ruler across the bottom plate and move it back and forth. While doing this, turn the agitator brush manually. If the bristles of the brush do not touch the edge of the ruler, they will have to be replaced.

Replacing the vacuum cleaner brush is quite easy. You can follow the steps stated above in replacing the belt but this time, you will remove the brush. Just make sure your replacement fits your unit.
